Bronchial Asthma

Bronchial asthma can occur during any time within an individual’s lifetime, from the time of adolescents, to any period within adulthood. An attack of asthma is characterized by the narrowing of the large and small airways. When a spasm occurs within these large and small airways, the individual will have an asthmatic attack. There is also an over production of a thick very tenacious mucous within the mucosal lining of these vessels. The mucous can either be clear in color, or can be yellowish should there be an infection. Coughing is one the symptoms that will occur. This is natures’ way of trying to expel the built up mucous. There may be times when the patient will find it difficult to bring up this mucous. When an attack occurs, the individual will experience a bout of hyperventilation that will try to compensate for the reduction in the air supply to the lungs. As the attack progresses, the airways become more restricted with even more lessening of oxygen being delivered to the lungs, and the patient may develop a respiratory acidosis. causing a respiratory failure. Should this occur, the patient should see their healthcare provider as quickly as possible, and should it necessary, they can always go to the Emergency Room.

There can be many causes that will trigger an asthma attack. The amounts of allergens that are in the environment are enormous. Fumes and odors from such things as second hand smoke, gasoline, paint, perfumes, and household chemicals are just a few such triggers. Then there are the allergens from the outdoors, such as grasses, pollens, certain plants, etc. Indoors, there can be fumes given off by carpeting, a new paint job and of coarse our pets that shed hair and dander. And the list can go and on, but yet there are other triggers of a physical nature that bring on an attack. Here stress plays an extremely significant part and can often be the trigger. When the individual feels like they may be about to have an attack, what should they do? Read the best thing to do in the health hints below.

Health Hints***

The initial thing that an asthmatic patient has to do is to try to determine what the triggers are that usually trigger an asthmatic attack. In many instances this can be a most difficult and trying thing to accomplish. They need to see an Allergist, who will perform many tests to try to determine these triggers. Even this may not be able to give them a definitive answer, although he/she will give the patient medications, such as expectorants and inhalers to minimize an attack.

In order to get relief at home the best thing the patient can do is use steam. There are steam inhalers that can be purchased, and they should have this in the home at all times. They should not go into a hot shower in order to get steam, but they can run a real hot shower, and sit there for 15 minutes or so. If the expectorant the Allergist prescribed does not seem to be working too well, they should ask their Pharmacist to recommend one over-the-counter.
