Preventing And Fighting The Flu

Fortunately this year there is no shortage of the flu vaccine. In the year 2004 there was a severe shortage of the flu vaccine due to a company in England that manufactured the flu vaccine being shut down due to contamination being found in their manufacturing process. Every year the FDA determines what strain of flu will be prevalent, and the companies use that as guideline as to what vaccine will be manufactured and distributed.

Getting your flu shot is the right thing to do, especially for the very young and those in their senior years. Flu viruses spread so quickly that approximately 30 to 60 million Americans will come down with it and approximately some 36,000 will die. The flu viruses mutate so quickly that even some individuals who have received the flu vaccine may still be at risk. In their cases the flu shot may prove worthless, especially if their immune systems are in a very weakened state. That is because their immune system cannot protect them against a specific virus that might have mutated after they received the flu vaccine.

Those individuals with weakened immune systems may not be aware of the dangers they face. They are very prone to catching colds and the flu, but it doesn’t stop there. They are also seriously at risk for developing bronchitis, pneumonia, and sinus problems as well. This makes it imperative that each individual do everything in their power to maintain their immune systems at the highest peak levels in order to protect themselves against the on onslaught of colds and the flu.

Prevention is the best way to help the immune system, and by using all preventive measures, you are forming a barrier against the cold and flu. Read more about these preventive measures in the health hints below.

Health Hints***

By now you’ve gotten the idea. You will be spending a lot of time washing your hands, but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. As an added note: keep your hands away from you eyes, nose and mouth. These are excellent portals for bacteria and viruses to enter your body.

To further build up your immune system, you need to look to your diet. Your diet should include such foods that will have an impact on your immune system. The following are just a small list but they will have the greatest impact. Try to include them whenever possible, al least of few of each on a daily basis.

Your final preventive measure should include a good exercise program that you can stick with and use daily. Part of your exercise should also include walking at least on half hour daily. And try to keep moving as much as possible and not become sedentary in your lifestyle.
