Anniversary***

August 15th will be the anniversary of my being in practice for 51 years. The practice of Chiropractic has been a revelation to me in that I have been able to help countless numbers of patients. Helping these people to be restored to a pain-free, active lifestyle is my continued motivation to help seniors in achieving their goals for a better life so that they can remain, vigorous and active throughout the “Golden Years”.

News And Commentary***

In my continued effort to bring you information on “Living The Good Life”, I have written a book called, “Doctor’s Journal-A-Guide For Senior Longevity”. It is being published as we speak. It will be in eBook and paperback versions. The eBook is now available and is obtainable at the following site ® link: www.1stbooks.com

At the site enter CANE in the author find box. The Title will come up and you can then click on it to see what the book cover looks like. Clicking on preview will give you a short introduction to why this book can be so valuable to the senior.

The paperback version has just gone to the printer and should be available in approximately 4 to 5 weeks.  I will inform you when the printing has been completed.

The book is written so that the layman will understand and relate to the conditions covered in this 33-chapter book and eBook. It will answer most questions that so many individuals have regarding a condition that can be causing them a great deal of pain and anguish.

Healthfully Yours***

Gardening can be a very important pastime not only for seniors, but people of all ages. Gardening is not only pleasurable in that it gives you a sense of satisfaction in seeing something grow into a beautiful, esthetic thing of beauty, but is a great way of exercising your muscles and joints. For the individual who is unable to have even a small plot of dirt, they can enjoy the pleasure of having plants in the home. They add beauty to our lives and can be effective in reducing stress. However, you should also be aware that plants, particularly many of the indoor variety could pose a serious health hazard. Some individuals like to use leaves or roots of some plants to brew a tea. Children and pets will eat the leaves from plants and this could cause serious harm and even death. Knowing the plants that may pose this hazard is your best defense.

THE MOST POISONOUS ARE:

THE FLOWERING VARIETY ARE:

  • Daffodil
  • Azalea
  • Mistletoe and Holly
  • Poinsettia
  • Amaryllis

OTHER VARIETIES ARE:

  • Dieffenbachia, also called “Dumb Cane” (trust me, it wasn’t named after me).

  • English Ivy

  • Philodendrons

  • Pothos, or devils ivy

  • Snake Plant (Mother-in-law tongue)

These plants, in particular, should not be brewed and used as tea under any circumstance. INSTRUCT CHILDREN of their danger, and try to teach them the potential seriousness of eating the leaves.

If the leaves of any of these plants are eaten, seek medical treatment immediately. If medical help is not immediately available, go directly to a Hospital. Be sure to take the plant or sample leaves with you.

You should also call the POISON CONTROL CENTER, and be sure to inform them of the name of the plant. They can be reached at: 1-800-222-1222. This is a number that should always be available near your telephone. It can save your life, or someone’s life.

DO NOT try to induce vomiting even if you have Ipecac (Ipecac is used to induce vomiting). Speak to your doctor or Poison Control Center first.

Around The Internet***

In my last newsletter I wrote about “Identity Theft”. The scam artists and con men out there do not stop at this alone. Since the advent of the Internet, there are more schemes being foisted on the public. Unfortunately, it seems that seniors are the targets for these unscrupulous individuals, due to the increase of seniors going on the Internet.

Many of these predators are constantly sending quick money making schemes that promise a quick return of your money with more hundreds and even thousands in profits, all without leaving your computer. All you have to do is send in a few bucks and sit back and have the money roll-in. (Don’t hold your breath!).

There are schemes that target seniors in the travel industry by offering travel plans that are hard to refuse. Be extremely wary of any offer that sounds too good to be true. You will wind up paying for a trip in advance, but when the time comes to leave, you will find that there is no such trip, literally standing there holding your bag with no-where to go. The same holds true in the now very popular auction sector. Here they offer for auction, a very fine item for the lowest price imaginable. You certainly can’t resist a bargain such as this. You bid on the item and lo and behold, you are the winning bidder. You send in your check, and you wait patiently to receive this great bargain, however, you will never receive the item.  And, let’s not forget those great investments that can make you rich. Newswires recently reported a Pyramid scheme that bilked seniors out of millions of dollars in Las Vegas, Nevada. This is nearly a daily occurrence. Once these scam artists have scored enough money, they are gone. And, in most cases your money is gone without ever having a chance of being recovered.

There are precautions you should take to avoid on-line consumer fraud. Use a credit card only, rather than checks, unless you have checked out the individual. You can also use the auction sites escrow services to make payment. Before making any investment other than with a known brokerage house, you can check with your state securities regulator. You can obtain their location at: www.nasaa.org

Other sites you can check with, that alert you to consumer fraud are:
www.natlconsumersleague.org

www.bbbonline.com
www.scambusters.com
www.cybercrime.gov
www.ftc.gov

Another very good site that protects against scam artists who’s main objective is to rip you off is:

Internet Cop:  http://icop.org

If you should come across any questionable practices, you can report it at this site. We can all help in getting these scam artists off the Internet.

Finally, never give out vital financial data about your investments. Do not give anyone your social security number, pin number, or bank account number. Do not give out your mother’s maiden name. Of course there are exceptions to these precautions, and that is when you know exactly whom you are dealing with, and have dealt with them before. “Be careful out there”!

Recent Articles***

My most recent article titled “Foot Health” can be found in the “Doctor’s Journal” and can be read at my website: www.doctorsexercise.com. This article has information that can be extremely important to your general health and living an active normal life. The feet are the foundation of the body and any impairment to their structural integrity will have a profound bearing on whether we suffer painful consequences, and a lifetime of pain and discomfort.

After this newsletter is published, please look for another article that I have written concerning problems with the feet. It is called “Metatarsalgia”. That too can be read at: www.doctorsexercise.com . Many people have pain in either one or both feet and Metatarsalgia can be the causative factor. This article may give you an insight in alleviating and possibly eradicating this very painful condition.

I would also suggest that when you are reading the articles in the “Doctor’s Journal”, check out all the articles. There may one or several that will be of interest to you. These articles cover a full range of conditions that affect many seniors and baby boomers.

We, here at Doctor’s Senior Exercise appreciate your subscription to our newsletter. We hope that you have found our newsletter informative, easy to read and above all else, helpful in Your quest for living the “Good Life”.
