My
Apologies***
I wish to apologize to all the visitors to
the Doctor’s Senior Exercise web site who tried to subscribe to the
Doctor’s Senior Exercise & Health Newsletter and was unable to complete
the subscription process. I had been getting notices of this glitch in
the subscription process, and numerous emails that they were unable to
subscribe. Hopefully, this has now been rectified, and I urge those of
you who had this problem to please try again. Sorry for the
inconvenience, and thank you for your patience…. Doc Cane.
News And Commentary***
What has happened to all those free sites
that were so readily available on the Internet? Remember when we used to
get those free websites, offers to archive your snapshots into a family
photo gallery, and companies that would store your information, all for
free. There were free forums and bulletin boards that would allow you to
be in communication with friends and family.
That however is rapidly becoming a thing
of the past. Many sites have started charging a monthly or annual
subscription fee. Listbot.com now charges $149.00 for services that had
been free. Yahoo charges for real time stock quotes, their online
magazine and auction listings. BlueLight.com, that was great for surfing
is no longer the same.
Charges by long distance companies, for
calls you could make from computer to computer are now being charged
for. Net2phone is one of the companies that have gotten on this
bandwagon. You can no longer get free storage for your information at
i-drive.com. All the companies that were once free made money through
advertising. Now, they have found better ways, and they justify this by
what they say are “premium services”. Oh well, we can’t stand in the way
of progress. However, there are many sites that are free and it is only
a matter of finding them. I can help you in that regard. Read on in this
newsletter and I will mention several sites in my “Around The Internet”.

We are having a heat wave. The
temperatures all over the country have been reaching record highs. Even
though it is extremely important that we maintain proper fluid levels in
the body at all times, it is even more imperative that we do so in hot
weather. We engage in more activities that require the increase of
hydration our body requires. The more active you are, the more you
perspire and that fluid lost in perspiration will have to be replaced.
Athletes, especially the weekend athlete
is more prone to dehydration than the professional athlete, who is more
familiar with being properly hydrated. The amateur runner needs to be
aware of this increased need for hydration. Any activity from mild to
strenuous causes dehydration in such a rapid manner that it actually
hits you without being aware of it, until you start feeling faint,
dizzy, flushed and start to get cramping of muscles. You may feel
disoriented and mentally confused. Excessive dehydration can cause you
to become unconscious at the most inopportune time. Can you imagine this
happening while you are driving? If you are driving in very hot
climates, have a bottle of water with you so that you can take a sip
every 20 minutes or so. It doesn’t matter that you are in an
air-conditioned car.
When engaged in any type of exercise, even
when taking a leisurely walk, you should have fluids approximately every
20 minutes or so, especially during high temperatures. The best time for
any such activity is early morning or late afternoon, during the coolest
time of day. Relaxing at home, doing housework, gardening, or doing your
exercises require that you replace fluids that are lost without you
being aware of.
To replace these fluids, do not use sugar
drinks such as sodas. Most sodas or soft drinks also contain caffeine or
sugar substitutes. Juices are not the best way to hydrate the body. Most
juices are too acidic and tend to raise the ph of the urinary tract. If
you must use a flavored drink, use a drink that will replace the needed
electrolytes in the body. Such a drink is Gatorade, but by far, the best
drink is still water. Drink at least 8 eight-ounce glasses of water
during the day. Do not drink the glassful of water all at once, but sip
it slowly each time you drink. It is better to drink the water at room
temperature, than ice cold.
Drinking enough water has many more
benefits that will enhance your health. Water has a great impact on most
of the bodily functions. Without water these functions are not only
impaired, but can cause many health problems. Some of these problems
are:
-
Muscle cramps, especially during
physical activities.
-
Prevention of constipation by softening
stools.
-
Prevention of kidney stones by
constantly flushing the kidneys and diluting the acids.
-
Dilution of these acids can also help in
the prevention of gout.
-
Helps in the digestion of foods and the
absorption of the nutrients that the body derives from the food we
eat.
-
Water nourishes the largest organ of our
body-the skin. It keeps the skin supple and clear by replacing needed
moisture.
-
Water helps regulate the body thermostat
and keeps the temperature regulated. This also balances the body’s
electrolytes.
-
People who constantly have dryness of
the mouth, eyes and mucous membranes will find it very advantageous to
sip water during the day.
-
Always drink enough water when taking
any medication. This helps the body to absorb the medication more
quickly.
-
Drinking adequate amounts of water can
also prevent urinary infections. Urinary infections (cystitis) are
more prevalent in women due to the fact that the urethra (the tube
that allows the urine to be voided from the bladder) is shorter than
that in men making them more prone to infections. Mixing 8 ounces of
cranberry juice with 8 ounces of water can be very helpful according
to many people in combating recurrent cystitis.
-
Increased heart rate. Rapid heart rate
occurs when a person is dehydrated.
-
Prevent heatstroke. Body temperatures
will rise rapidly during dehydration. This can be an insidious process
that the individual is not aware of, and just sneaks up on you.
So you can see how important roll water
has in the body to maintain a normal functioning of all its systems.
After all the body is made up of a large percentage of water and when
this water is depleted, it has to be replaced. Not replacing the water
can set up any of the above scenarios causing serious health problems.

Recent Articles***
I read a very interesting article in the
Sun-Sentinel dated August 12, 2001, written by Jessie Halladay the
health correspondent. It concerns a condition known as “Hyperventilation
Syndrome”. There are many conditions where hyperventilation can occur.
Anxiety is one of the most common and the most known by the average
individual. This can also occur during any course of assisted breathing,
or during the course of CPR. When there is over-ventilation there is a
constriction of the cerebral arteries that results in a lack of oxygen
to the brain (Hypoxia). There is a progression of symptoms leading to a
respiratory failure and blackout. There are conditions of the central
nervous system CNS), liver conditions and many other causative factors
that can also cause hyperventilation. Those with asthma or chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can be especially prone to
hyperventilation.
What made this article of particular
interest is that it discusses swimmers; particularly those that like to
swim underwater, and those who like to test their endurance to see how
long they can remain underwater. Children are especially notorious for
seeing who can stay under water the longest. They also do breath-holding
contests out of the water. Adults too are prone to seeing how far they
can swim under water. What makes this so dangerous is that when the
swimmer is underwater, hypoxia can occur and they will blackout. The end
result is that unless there is help at hand to aid the swimmer, they
will drown.
I hope this will serve as a warning
concerning this practice. A swimmer is also better served when they do
not swim alone. Always use the “Buddy System”, whether adult or child.
I hope you enjoyed this newsletter. If you
think a friend might enjoy reading it also, please email it to them in
its entirety.
