Healthfully yours***

In this the beginning of a New Year we can only hope and pray for a better year than the last. After the disaster of September 11th our world as we knew it before has changed forever. The New Year is a time for reflection and a time for making resolutions. The most important resolution should be one that improves and maintains the health of all Americans, young and old alike.

The rapid aging of the population makes it more incumbent for all seniors from the age of 40 and up to be more aware of their health and remaining healthy as they enter the senior years. With aging there can be gradual erosion of the joints, muscles, ligaments and of course the bodily functions. Changes may occur in any of the major organs that may or may not be age related.

Slowing the phenomenon of these changes is up to the individual and should be the uppermost priority on your list of resolutions for the New Year. In fact that should be the number one resolution on your list. If you don’t have your health, nothing else really matters, does it? A healthy body not only means your physical well-being, but maintaining sharp mental faculties as well.

Maintaining the physical integrity and mental acuity that makes for a healthy lifestyle and achieving the goal of longevity is a daunting task, only if we make it so. Therefore it is up to each and every one us to decide on how we are going to go about staying the healthiest that we can.

Many people make resolutions for the New Year, and many write these resolutions down. That really is not such a bad idea. The written word is always there as a reminder and may be instrumental in keeping these resolutions. So now is the time to get your pen and paper in hand and start writing. To help you on the right path I will give you some important suggestions. You may think of others, so be sure to include those as well. For the suggestions, read on in Health Hints.

Health Hints***

1. I will start an exercise program if I haven’t already started one. I will also be more active, by walking more, gardening, swimming, playing sports, and anyway I can be more on the move and more vigorous.

2. I will watch my diet more and make an effort to reduce the amount of fats I eat, especially animal fats and dairy fats of the saturated variety. I will try to avoid all foods containing transfats. I will increase the amount of fiber in the foods I eat.

3. Not only will I watch what I eat, but will make an effort to cut down on the amount of food I eat by eating smaller portions.

4. If I am overweight I will make every effort to lose the unnecessary pounds that places my heart at risk.

5. I will be sure that I am eating the foods that will give me all the vitamins and minerals that are so necessary to maintain our bodily functions. In addition, to be certain that I am getting enough of of the daily requirements of these vitamins and minerals, I will take the additional supplementation that will assure I do get the proper daily amounts of these essential nutrients.

6. If I smoke, I will make every effort to STOP SMOKING! THIS REALLY SHOULD BE YOUR NUMBER ONE RESOLUTION. It was deliberately placed here so that I could call your attention to it in a manner that would place more emphasis on its importance.

7. If I drink to excess, if I am a man I will make every effort to limit my drinks to two daily, and if I am a woman I will make every effort to limit my drinks to one daily.

8. I will wash my hands very often throughout the day, especially after touching doorknobs, flushing toilet handles, holding on to handrails and shaking hands, etc. The more times you wash the better your protection from the germs that can be encountered and find their way into your body. Keep your hands away from your mouth, nose and eyes. These are the easiest pathways for germs to enter your body. And I certainly will wash my hands before sitting down to eat.

9. I will remember to floss and brush my teeth morning and evening. This sounds like telling a child to be sure and brush their teeth, however this is one of the most important things that you can do to prevent bacteria from entering your system and causing a great many problems.

10. I will try to stay away from crowded areas, and if I know someone who is coughing and sneezing, I will keep my distance from them.

11. If I have a cold, fever, cough, pain, or any symptom that seems to linger for more than a few days, I will see my healthcare provider to have it checked out.

You’ve heard the expression “Healthy, Wealthy And Wise”, well dedicating yourself to the above 11 resolutions will not make you wealthy, but will certainly make you “Healthy And Wise”. The “Wealth” is in being healthy, and having your health is everything.

I wish you all, the Happiest, Healthiest New Year, with the world at peace and tranquility in all our lives and laughter in our hearts!
