is written monthly, solely for information to help seniors, baby boomers
and anyone who may have an interest in staying healthy, living a
vigorous, active lifestyle and combating the aging process. It does not
constitute the practice of medicine and is not meant to prescribe
treatments. It is offered strictly as an educational aid. Any medical
problems you may have, we recommend that you seek the help of your
physician or other healthcare professional. Discussing your intentions
with your doctor is always the proper procedure. The newsletter also
includes know-how in the form of useful tips and links to more extensive
material on the Internet. You may wish to share this newsletter by

The ABC’s Of Skin Care***
The skin as the largest organ of the body can be a
challenge in its care and maintenance. In a previous newsletter dated:
1/23/04 I wrote about the “Winter Effects On Skin”, which you can read
in the “Journal Index” at:
www.doctorsexercise.com . Summer months can be extremely hard on the
skin, because there are greater areas of exposure to the sun and
environmental factors. Basically, skin care is an all year round
necessity.
Unfortunately there are many of us who did not
know or heed warnings of what the sun will do to our skin in our earlier
years. Because of that, we must now live with that, “And Pay The Piper”.
What many people do not realize, is that even on cloudy days you are
seriously at risk due to the ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure that
occurs all year round. UVA and UVB are all part of the ultraviolet
spectrum. Those who live at high altitudes are even more at risk because
there is less atmosphere filtering of the ultraviolet rays.
Sunburns are a major factor in causing skin
cancers. There are 3 forms of skin cancer, basil cell, squamous cell and
the more serious melanoma. Those individuals, who have had sunburns at
least 5 times or more, are apt to have some form of skin cancers later
on in their lifetimes. Sun is an important factor in maintaining healthy
bones. Everyone should have 15 minutes of exposure on a daily basis.
This amount of exposure will provide the necessary daily requirement of
vitamin D that is so important for maintaining the strength of the bones
and in the prevention of osteoporosis. Basically, what this means, is
that if you have to be in the sun for longer periods, whether at the
beach, work, sports, gardening, etc., after the 15 minute allotment, you
need to apply a sunscreen with at least an SPF (sun screen factor) of 15
or more.
Individuals that are blonde or redheaded, with
fair complexions are more at risk. Race plays no role in your risk
factor for sunburns or over exposure to the ultraviolet rays that are so
harmful to you skin. Other than the cancer risks, the drying out of the
skin is another extremely important side effect of being overexposed to
the sun. Dryness of the skin is a factor that is part of our aging
process as well. That coupled with over exposure to the sun, can cause
serious dryness of the skin. With skin dryness, other problems such as,
itching, rashes, age spots, sagging skin and wrinkles can develop as
well.
Detection of skin cancers should be a concern for
everyone. Each individual should designate one day of the month for a
full body inspection that encompasses the entire body from head-to-toe.
Look for any new growths and changes that may have occurred in a mole
that you may already have had. Check any area that may itch or develops
a rash. If you are prone to skin irritations, rashes or growth, be sure
to see a dermatologist every 6 months. Every individual should visit a
dermatologist on a yearly basis. For more information on

After being aware of all the apparent dangers that
one is faced with in the care and prevention of damage that can be
caused to the skin, the care and maintenance is the next logical step in
having a healthy skin. Read about the care and maintenance in the health
hints below.
Health Hints***
- Smoking is extremely bad for skin. Smoking is
a notorious cause of wrinkling of the skin. If you smoke…STOP!
- Protection against the sun and ultraviolet
rays even on cloudy days, apply a sunscreen with an SPF factor of 15
or more to the areas of body that will exposed, even face or scalp.
Use a lip balm with an SPF factor of 15. Sun can be harmful to the
hair and scalp, so wear a hat or cap, and be sure to wear sunglasses
to protect the eyes. Try to stay out of the sun between the hours of
10 a.m. and 4 p.m. as this is when is most dangerous. Remember, even
when driving in your car, you are exposed to ultraviolet rays,
unless your car windows have protective UV film that will block
harmful rays. The same holds true for your windows at home.
- Tanning Salons are another way for serious
exposure to ultraviolet rays and pose serious ways to damage your
skin.
- Daily showers or baths have a tendency to dry
out the skin. Showering or bathing every other day can help prevent
dryness. Sponge bathing on the other days can be sufficient.
- The soap you use can be a factor in causing
dryness. Soap should be mild and non- irritating. A good example is
Dove or Ivory soap.
- Moisturizing the skin is a necessity to keep
the skin supple and smooth, and should be used on a daily basis, and
if necessary, twice daily. Use a good moisturizer, preferably one
that is hypoallergenic. Apply to the entire body, even your nails.
- Many men find shaving a chore, because they
wind up with sore or irritated skin. Using an aftershave will tend
to dry the skin because of the alcohol content. Instead, after
shaving, apply a little witch hazel and a moisturizer that is
specific for facial use. The witch hazel has soothing astringent
affect.
- An excellent way to moisturize the skin when
you have an hour or more to spare is follow this regime: After your
shower or bath, just pat dry and do not dry yourself completely.
Apply baby oil or light mineral oil all over your body. Put a robe
on and relax for an hour or so. After which you can dress and go
about your daily routine. This will leave your shin smooth and
supple. Once you try this, you will always use this.
